A list of common adsense mistakes made by website owners and publishers

Don't Use Borders

Make sure to blend your ads into the page. Don't use borders. Set the border to the same color as your background and you will surely see your revenue go up.

Too Many Ads

This may be counter intuitive but I find that a lot of times in smaller niches you are better off with fewer ads. For example, if you have a skyscaper ad running in a low visibility sidebar location appearing higher in the source code than 2 other ads your ePC (earnings per click) will probably be very low. The reason for this is you might have $1-2 ads in your sidebar not getting clicks while your content ads are only pulling $.20 per click. I find that running 2-3 ad units with 1 text ad each seems to be a good strategy for maximizing ePC and eCPM in a lot of cases.

Poor Ad Placement

I find that a ton of people try to place all their content in the middle then they fill up their sidebars with tons of ads. It seems that people are becoming ad blind to sidebar crap. I suggest placing ads either at the base of your content or between articles.

Never change the Adsense code

There are enough means of adsense optimization & customizations available to change the colour, background or border to suit your needs. Do whatever you want to do outside the code, never fiddle within the ad or the search code. They know it when you do. The search code has more limitations to colour and placement, but you should adhere to the rules. The code may stop working and violates the TOS.

Never click your own adsense ads or get them clicked for whatever reason

You know this one very well. This is a surefire way to close you Adsense account. Never tell your office associates or friends to click on them. Keep a check if your family or children are busy increasing your income by clicking your ads and indirectly trying to stop your income. Dont even think of offering incentives for clicks, using automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software. Adsense is very smart to detect fraudulent clicks. Check the ads which appear on your pages by the Google Preview tool if required.

Don't Use Adsense!

Many large publishers have started to become disenfranchised with Google Adsense. Lack of transparency on Google's part, inexplicable revenue cuts, banning accounts for supposed "inappropriate material", and vague and ambiguous terms of service tend to make Google Adsense frustrating to deal with. I think Google owes it to their publishers to at least reveal how much of a cut they are taking from each click. Google may be the big dog now, but abusing their power could put them in the same boat as Microsoft in a few years with declining market share and loss and unhappy users. You better hope you dump that bloated stock before the ship goes down.
