Restaraunts of exceptional quality,character.(non corporate)

The special and unique local restaurant is getting harder to find. The massive infrastructure of the corporations is making it harder and harder to compete or harder to resist selling out. Thus creating an empty homogeized version of a truly special thing. These places have been built on dreams and YEARS of hard hard work. We know them when we see them and some of us consider them one of the "simple pleasures" in life that make it worth living! Let's celebrate them as SHINING EXAMPLES!

Chili John's (818) 846-3611 2018 W Burbank Blvd Burbank, CA 91506 Opened in 1946, Burbank's oldest restaurant sports a painted white-brick exterior and a large red-lettered logo. Inside, gingham curtains, a mural of the Rockies and a welded horseshoe hat stand create the Midwestern vibe. The U-shaped counter surrounds a serving station where bowls of chili start off simple--just the meat or veggie base--and work up from there. Patrons specify mild, medium or hot, and can request beans, spaghetti, cheese, sour cream and onions. The formula is the creation of John Issac, a Lithuanian who came to the United States in 1879. John opened a restaurant in 1913 bearing a sign reading only "Chili". This restaurant was located at the foot of the Main St. bridge. Fans of his recipe soon began calling him "Chili John", and the name of the restaurant was born.Over the past 80 years, the recipe has never varied.
