A List Apart - Hybrid CSS Dropdown

Here is a nice nav from A List Apart. I generally don't like to have a lot of dropdown items in my navs. I believe that is bad for usability and SEO. CSS is definitely the way to go, I just prefer to have 2nd/3rd tier navs appear conditionally only on related themes/silos.
